Cacela Velha

It is the most beautiful village in the Ria Formosa from where you can see one of the most beautiful views of the eastern Algarve. Very peaceful, the charm of Cacela Velha is walled in a million-year-old fossil cliff. It was a crossing point for Greek and Phoenician navigators, it was expanded by the Romans and ended up becoming prestigious for the Arabs, who called it Hisn-Kastala, which means brown or cattle pasture. During the years that followed, Cacela Velha was an important maritime-agricultural population center. After being conquered from the Moors in 1240, the village became the target of pirate attacks throughout the 14th century. Then began the tendency for the population to abandon the town and spread across farms and farms to the mountains. Despite remaining connected to the sea, Cacela acquired a distinctly rural character.
Once in Cacela Velha, don't miss the 17th century fortress, the houses with traditional Algarve architecture from the 18th century, the church of medieval origin, the Islamic ruins, the Roman ovens and the remains of the old medieval wall.
